I don’t know what Lao Tsu truly meant when he said: the journey of a thousand miles begins with one step. Maybe he meant just that, maybe he meant something more, I truly have no idea. What I do know, is that a lot of people i have met seem to think that you need to prepare, cleanse or be in a certain state of mind before you can take that first step.
I can’t agree.
The universe, or how ever you call your divine inspiration, your divine entity, knows you’re ready for that first step. It has known you all your life. The difference between it and you, is that it doesn’t carry the doubts and the judgement you carry about yourself.
It knows all you need is that next step. It could be the first step in a new direction, the first step to something that will change your life significantly, but it is just a step. It can be as big or as small as you want it to be. The first step to moving across the country isn’t to drive across the country with your car loaded with boxes. The first step to any change is to decide to make a change. You have probably already made that first step and maybe think the second or third step is the first step.
I don’t know what Lao Tsu truly meant to communicate with that quote. What I do know is that you have already made quite a few steps. You are where you are today because of those steps. Where you are now is the sum of your steps. Take a moment to recognize how far you have come, then let it go. Lift your chin up. Look in front of you. Take the next step. You’re already there.
